Background

I grew up in the small town of Danville, 印第安纳州, with my wonderful parents 和 spent lots of time outside with my two brothers. 高中毕业后, where I first became interested in biology 和 genetics, I attended the University of Kentucky for my undergraduate education where I started working in a plant genetics lab. After graduation, I decided to continue my education 和 pursued a Ph.D. in Plant Breeding 和 Plant 遗传学 at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, working on genetic 和 cellular processes in the plant model system, 拟南芥. 在麦迪逊, my husb和 和 I spent four years in the San Francisco Bay Area where I was a post-doctoral reSearcher at the Carnegie Institution for Science. There I began my foray into maize genetic reSearch 和 we cultivated our passions for Giants Baseball (和 the Brewers when they were in town), 徒步旅行, Philz那样的咖啡, 和鳄梨. In 2011, I accepted the call to teach in the 生物学 Department at WLC 和 we made the big trek back to the Midwest. I live in Wauwatosa with my husb和 和 daughters 和 we belong to St. John’s Evangelical Church in Tosa, where our kids also attend school. 作为一个家庭, we especially enjoy the summers when we can walk to the nearby Farmer’s Market, listen to summer concerts in the park, 和 go on vacations that always bring us to some kind of beach 和 徒步旅行. Not to mention the summers allow me lots of time to grow corn 和 work with students in my reSearch lab.

研究兴趣

I am interested in exploring how seeds develop 和 I use maize as a model system. The goals of my reSearch are to determine genes 和 factors that influence seed development 和 to specifically determine the contribution of the maternal parent to this process. My reSearch integrates techniques in genetics, 分子生物学, 细胞生物学, 和 plant physiology to answer this central question.

I am also interested in working with undergraduates to develop curriculum materials to share 生物学 和 Plant Science with younger students 和 the wider community. It is an awesome way to integrate science reSearch, 教学, 和 civic engagement 和 share the wonder 和 beauty of plant science with others.
